It's been quiet a while since Hugh Jackman starred in Shawn Levy's Real Steel, the 2011 film performed well making just below $300 million worldwide and gaining a good fanbase, DreamWorks had actually already signed Jackman and Levy to return for a sequel a week before the first film hit the big screen. Fans now are still asking themselves when the film will be made or whether it will even be made.
Director Shawn Levy has been busy and is currently at the Toronto International Film Festival with his film This is Where I leave You where he gave ComingSoon.net an update about Real Steel 2, he had this to say about the sequel:
"We have been quietly developing a sequel to 'Real Steel' for three and a half years. We've come up with some great scripts but Hugh and I would only make it if the plot feels fresh, but also the character journeys feel fresh, and we've found both but never at the same time. It's ongoing. I know the clock is ticking. That movie, weirdly, for a movie that did very well globally--it did okay domestically--but the love for 'Real Steel' remains kind of unique as far as rabid fans who ask me all the time for another one. Hugh and I love that movie so if we can crack it, we'll make it, but I have this sense that we better make that happen soon or frankly, the audience may not be there in the same way. So we shall see."
I would be completely on board with a sequel to Real Steel since I enjoyed the first film, I thought it was good and very charming, that being said, I have to agree with the word going around that it is getting late to make this film. The hardcore fans might be willing to wait for it but even those who liked the first one are gonna loose interest if they wait too long, at least I know I will so unless they plan to make it in the near future, which doesn't look to be the case, I think it might just be a little too late to get this going. Would you want to see a Real Steel 2? How long would you be willing to wait for it and still remain interested? Let me know below.
