Lucasfilm Met With David Fincher For 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

One of the many things that were being talked about since it was announced that Star Wars: Episode VII was coming was who would be directing the film, and before finally reaching an agreement with J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm must have met with a bunch of directors that rumors said included many A-Listers. One of the directors rumored to have talked to Lucasfilm was David Fincher, and the director himself is confirming the meeting took place but the discussion didn't lead anywhere.

Fincher was talking to Total Film, and in a conversation that included his upcoming film Gone Girl, the director revealed that he spoke with producer Kathleen Kennedy about possibly directing Star Wars: Episode VII. Fincher gave the following comments about the meeting:
"I talked to Kathy about it, but I think that it’s a different thing from… I don’t know what Disney-Lucasfilm will be like. It’s tricky. My favorite is The Empire Strikes Back. If I said, ‘I want to do something more like that,’ then I’m sure the people paying for it would be like, ‘No! You can’t do that! We want it like the other one with all the creatures!’ I always thought of Star Wars as the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters’ folly, the ultimate folly of man… I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it’s kind of gone by Return Of The Jedi."
With David Fincher being the great director that he is, I'm sure that most of us could agree that a Star Wars movie directed by him would be pretty interesting to see, but saying that he sees Star Wars as a slave story about C-3PO and R2-D2 is a bit odd, to say the least. That view is possibly why his involvement didn't end up happening, and he does point that out in a way by saying the people higher up probably wouldn't have let him make the film he would have wanted to.
