Recently rumors have been rampant about Chris Evans passing on the mantle of Captain America, whether it was because of Evans commenting on wanting to take a break from the character, or Sebastian Stan being signed for nine films while Evan's contract is running out after a few more films, and even because in the comic book world Marvel gave the mantle to Falcon which is played by Anthony Mackie in the film universe. This has left a lot of fans worried and confused as to what will happen to the character. Personally I didn't give much thoughts to the rumors, Marvel would just need to sign a new contract with Evans to appear in more films, and if he did want to take a break he could hand the mantle to Bucky or Falcon and then return again, either way I would be fine with it though I think the second option would be unlikely. I have said many times that I have enough trust in Marvel that they could go in any direction and I would give it a shot.
To the relief of many it looks like the rumors can be put to rest, at least for the time being. Chris Evans recently sat down with MTV for an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival and had a few thing to say about the rumors and the future of the character. When asked about passing on the shield the actor said, “Who’s handing off the shield? Don’t take my job from me prematurely dude. I got a few more movies that I have to finish first, which I'm happy to do. I’m sure it’ll happen at some point, all good things have to come to an end. But I’m really happy playing the character.”
About the future of the character and the plot of Captain America 3 Evans added "That's the beauty of the Marvel Universe. It's this giant web of plot, where everything is connected to everything else, whether it's Thor, whether it's Iron Man, whether it's Avengers, everything's kind of involved. … Every time a film is announced, there's this surge of excitement about where they're gonna go, and with Cap 3, we're gonna continue that excitement."
I think with these comments those who where worried can relax for now, it doesn't look like Steve Rogers will be handing off his shield in the movie world anytime soon. For the time being we can still look forward to Evans being Captain America in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America 3 which open in May 2015 and May 2016, respectively.
