Alex Kurtzman Hints a Darker Venom in Spider-Man Spinoff

Sony's Spider-Man cinematic universe is in a strange place at the moment, after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't hit the mark it was hoped it would the doubts started to emerge. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was pushed to 2018 to make room for Sinister Six in 2016, Venom possibly coming in 2017 and a female super hero film also in the plans. But with all the negativity surrounding the projects there seems to be someone who firmly believes, and that is Alex Kurtzman.

The writer/director talked to MTV News recently and gave some insight on the Venom character and the Spider-Man franchise. When asked about his interest for the character Kurtzman said, "Well, Venom is sort of the flip side in that there are certain lines that Spider-Man won’t cross because he’s Peter Parker and Peter Parker will only do certain things and Venom is an entirely different character. Venom, in a weird way, is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He’s a much darker character. I wouldn't even really say more complicated because I think they’re both very complicated characters, but I think the attraction for me to Venom is the idea that you can do things that you can’t do with Spider-Man."

Kurtzman also seemed very optimistic about the entire Spider-Man franchise by saying, "Spider-Man has always occupied its own wonderful unique space. The stories have evolved. You know, Spider-Man has the benefit of having so many more movies than even some of the movies that have 2s and 3s in front of them from Marvel. I think as long as it keeps staying true to character, and true to who Peter is, and putting him in interesting and complicated situations, it’ll survive. Because it’s so beloved. Everybody loves Spider-Man."

So for now the future of the Sony Spider-Man cinematic universe is still unclear in some aspects but the good news is that the people involved believe in it, you have to believe in what you doing in order for it to go well. Sure, sometimes you can believe and things still might go wrong but if you don't have confidence and believe from the beginning, you are destined to fail for sure. Venom is a rich and great character to explore and I think would make for a fun film, hopefully it shapes up to work out in the end.
