Robert Downey Jr. in Final Talks to Join 'Captain America 3' with Civil War Storyline

Last week Robert Downey Jr. was messing with everyone's head talking about there being more Iron Man films or not, which ended with him saying that there were no more Iron Man films planned but he will still be doing "other fun stuff" with Marvel, and now those plans may have finally been revealed. Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly in final talks to appear in Captain America 3, and that the film will be an adaptation of the comic book storyline Civil War.

Variety gave the exclusive of Downey Jr. being in closing negotiations to join the film and the plans for using the Civil War storyline. According to the report, the deal with Robert Downey Jr. almost didn't go through, since the original planned Iron Man role in the film was small but the actor wanted a bigger part and bigger pay. The demands reportedly angered Marvel Entertainment Chief Ike Perlmutter, who asked the screenwriters to completely write Iron Man out of the script, but Kevin Feige remained in talks with Downey Jr.'s reps considering the impact the already planned Civil War storyline would have on future films for the next seven years. Considering all ends well, Robert Downey Jr. would get $40 million out of the deal and additional pay if Captain America 3 performs better than The Winter Soldier.

The Civil War storyline from the comics introduces the Superhero Registration Act, that stipulates that anyone with superpowers must reveal their secret identities to the U.S. government and at the same time act as a police force for the authorities. This whole idea sits well with Iron Man but not with Captain America, pinning them against each other and causing all other superheroes to choose a side, leading to a "Civil War". This storyline beginning in Captain America 3 will reportedly be the start of a new phase for Marvel films, offering material leading to Avengers 3 and 4.

Being that all of this ends up being true and Marvel confirms it, I am completely on board with this idea. The Civil War storyline is really interesting and after already seeing these heroes team up, the next fun thing would be to see would be to see them fight each other. The interesting thing would be how Marvel will handle the adaptation, since in the cinematic universe secret identities are not really an issue and the absence of characters like Spider-man, the X-Men and the Fantastic 4. Of course Robert Downey Jr. has to be Iron Man, he is Tony Stark, what I think ended up happening is he turned his demands down a notch because he realized that, at this point and time, the character is making him more than he is making the character.

We will have to wait until more details are revealed and confirmed, Captain America 3 will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and begins production in spring in for a May 6th, 2016 release date.
