Deadline reported on Orci leaving the directing chair, and pointed out that there might be "fire behind the smoke that he won't be directing." According to the report, Edgar Wright is among the directors who are on the list to take the job, and Roberto Orci will still remain attached to the film as producer. Orci himself got the job to direct Star Trek 3 by replacing J.J. Abrams.
It's always disappointing to hear about the departure of a director from a film, specially in this case since Orci had been involved in the franchise since the previous two installments as a writer. This would have also been the directorial debut of Orci, and would have been a great opportunity to show what he can do with such a big project that he knows so well. I am also very curious as to what the issues were that cause the departure of Orci, but we might never know that for sure. Edgar Wright would be a great choice as a replacement, but it's not a fact that he is the one taking the job, and the other directors on the list are probably great too. Hopefully a new director is found soon and the film can move forward without any further problems. Star Trek 3 is expected to hit theaters in 2016.
