James Gunn Hints at Possible 'Guardian of the Galaxy 3'

Guardians of the Galaxy was the biggest risk Marvel took when the film came out, but that risk came with plenty of rewards with the success the film had. The announcement of Phase 3 proved that Marvel is not afraid to continue to take chances, and in that list of upcoming films was Guardians of the Galaxy 2. But according to director James Gunn we might also have Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to look forward to.

The director sat down to talk to The Playlist (via Collider) and commented plenty about working on Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn talked about the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and kind of opened the door for a Guardians of the Galaxy 3:

 "We open up on a 'Mission: Impossible' scenario where all the characters die … No, to be honest, I had the basic story for number two while I was working on number one, and perhaps even beyond that.  So it's gonna answer a lot of questions that are proposed in the first one, and we'll be able to get to know some of the characters we didn't get to know in the first one a little bit more, and we might meet a few new characters too."

These comments aren't all that revealing about Guardian of the Galaxy 2, and don't directly imply that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is in the works. But it is nice to know that the possibility is there, and with the amount of success that these films could have you can't help but expect they will continue to expand on the Guardians universe. Still, It will be a while before we find out if a Guardians 3 is happening or not, so until them we can look forward to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hitting theaters on May 5th, 2017.
